Proposal Abstract: This is a proposal for a conference and concert to be held in February 2007 dealing with Mexican folk music, its regional and ethnic origins and transmission across borders, particularly into Southern California but also elsewhere in Latin America. The social, political, and cultural impact of this dissemination of the son is very great indeed but has received relatively little sustained attention from scholars. This event will bring together leading experts on Mexican sones from the United States, Mexico, and South America for a one-day conference at UCR; it will also feature a concert of Mexican music and dance in downtown Riverside at the Municipal Auditorium as well as a Wednesday at One presentation (in Room 166, ARTS) by two Mexican scholar-performers on the styles and techniques of Mexican folk music.
